What are Hives?
Hives or Urticaria are a common sign of an allergic reaction. Hives can also occur due to other causes, including a viral infection. Hives are raised bumps, called welts or wheals, on the skin. Hives can be small or large and can occur anywhere and all over the body. Hives can be itchy and extremely uncomfortable. Hives can occur due to an acute allergic reaction to an allergen or a major reaction to a medication. Hives can be one sign of an allergic reaction or hives can be one of many signs of an allergic reaction. Hives can occur during severe allergic reactions as well.
Treatment & Diagnosis of Hives
Hives are evaluated by Dr. Adler during your appointment. A series of questions may be asked to find the major cause of the adverse reaction. In the event the cause of Urticaria is not clear, an allergy test may be performed.
As far as treatment of the Hives, it is most common to eliminate the allergan from either your home, or diet. In some instances that it was a reaction to a medication you must record this for your personal sake, and avoid the medication in the future.
In some instances a medication may be prescribed such as an antihistamine. Some antihistamines may be available OTC but some must be prescribed by Dr. Adler. In the event you do not receive relief some topical creams may also be prescribed medication for treatment and relief.
