The easiest answer is whenever acne is present that doesn’t respond to OTC (over-the-counter) treatment. Many people feel that acne is just a normal thing to go through, and they might even be willing to accept some scarring as acceptable. But we need to realize that there is such a thing as neonatal acne, acne secondary to medications, and even mechanical acne that can be seen with shoulder pads for football. My answer then is patients can be seen at any age and for any reason. Our goal is to control the acne, and prevent scarring, and help prevent the psychological damage that can be permanent in some individuals. It is noteworthy that at least fifty percent of our patients are female and 25-50 years of age. It’s not just a kids’ problem.
